Iootasah Ompeau: Stand Tall and Fight: Stories of Native Americans, African Americans and Soldiers of Mixed Ethnicities in the Revolutionary War

Join the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society on Tuesday, October 6, for a presentation by Deborah Spears-Moorehead, an award-winning artist, historian, and member of the Seaconke Pokanoket Wampanoag Tribal Nation. Through her Fighting for Freedom project, Moorehead explores the contributions of Native Americans, African Americans, and soldiers of mixed ethnicities who fought alongside the colonists during the Revolutionary War. Her work includes a commemorative mural and an original song, “Fighting for Freedom: Iootasah Ompeau,” which debuted in March 2026 with the Nettukusq Singers. A descendant of Massasoit, Moorehead uses art, music, and storytelling to recover and share the histories of Indigenous peoples and other underrepresented Revolutionary War participants. The lecture will be held at the East Greenwich Police Department Community Room. All are welcome!
